Course Description   

Damage to the lingual attachment apparatus in the mandibular anterior region presents challenging conditions for both patients and clinicians to maintain over time. This presentation explores the etiology and sequelae of lingual attachment loss—particularly as a consequence of tongue jewelry trauma and advanced periodontal disease. Through clinical case documentation and long-term follow-up, the session highlights regenerative strategies that offer regenerative alternatives to extraction and implant therapy.

Participants will gain insight into current surgical techniques, including partial tunnel autogenous grafting and guided tissue regeneration, aimed at preserving and reconstructing the natural dentition in this complex anatomic region.

Course Objectives

1. Recognize and manage the periodontal complications resulting from tongue jewelry trauma.
2. Understand and apply autogenous grafting principles utilizing a partial tunnel technique.
3. Integrate regenerative strategies—including guided tissue regeneration—into the management of advanced periodontal defects at the mandibular central incisors.

About Dr Bennett

Dr. Patrick Bennett was born and raised on Whidbey Island, WA, and completed his undergraduate at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) with subsequent dental studies at the University of Southern California (USC). Graduating with honors at USC, Dr. Bennett also received the Thor Award. This award is given to the graduate that has shown outstanding dedication and service in providing dental care to underserved and/or disadvantaged children. He returned north to Seattle, WA for his periodontics residency with a class of four at the University of Washington (UW), where he received a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry. In addition to his periodontal training and 10+ years of experience, Dr. Bennett is a diplomate board-certified member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, Academy of Osseointegration, Washington State Society of Periodontics, Washington Dental Association, and Mt. Baker Dental Society.

He continues to further his expertise with continuing education courses around the country and gives regular lectures where he focuses on dental implantology, hard and soft tissue reconstruction, gingival (gum) grafting, and other procedures related to the esthetic plastic surgery of the mouth. Dr. Bennett lives in Bellingham. He enjoys fishing, wakesurfing, hiking, watching March Madness, travel, and spending time with family and friends. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Bennett also has a passion for cribbage, movies, and volunteering for his community.
