Course Description   
This course will give an overview of substance use disorder and its history, medications and treatments used for substance use disorder, oral manifestations of substance use disorder, and dental cases involving substance use disorder.

Course Objectives

• Understand the biology of addiction as a disease and learn the signs and symptoms of addiction. 
• Learn the different types of medication used to treat substance use disorder and how they work. 
• Understand the concept of harm reduction and how it applies to recovery. 
• Learn different forms of treatment for substance use disorder and the pros and cons of each. 
• Identify the oral manifestations of substance use disorder. 
• View dental cases in which patients in recovery have had their teeth restored and learn various ways to do so.

About Dr. Hobart
Emily Hobart, DMD, FAGD is a General Dentist who graduated from Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Glendale, Arizona in 2015.  Although she has experience in private practice, corporate practice, education, corrections, consulting, and public health, she has found her calling as the Dental Director of didgwalic Wellness Center in Anacortes since 2020.  didgwalic Wellness Center is a tribal federally qualified health center owned by the Swinomish Tribe, which focuses on the whole person in their substance use disorder recovery.  She is an active participant in organized dentistry, sitting on the WSDA Board of Directors, Chair of the CE Committee that plans PNDC, Delegate for the ADA and WSDA House of Delegates, and Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and Pierre Fauchard Academy.  She served as President of MBDDS in 2019-2020.  She lives in Anacortes with her husband Brian and her two daughters Edie Opal (3) and Indie Pearl (1).  In her free time she enjoys trivia, running, and listening to audiobooks.
